My Cycleon Story: Mark Murthwaite

Mark Murthwaite began his job as a Corporate Recruiter at Cycleon just over six months ago. He has 31 years of recruitment experience within various industries, the last 13 of which he spent working for a university in the UK recruiting master and professional doctorate students. He specializes in IT recruitment but also recruits for many other departments within Cycleon and assists international candidates in relocating to the Netherlands. His immense experience in the industry helps bring in top talent in the increasingly competitive job market.

After leaving his job for the university, he focused on self-development and charity work while deciding what his next career move would be. He knew his passion lied in recruitment but had decided that he did not want to join an agency. He began searching for companies that needed a dedicated, in-house recruiter within the HR team which is how he stumbled upon the opportunity at Cycleon through a friend of a friend. When asked what his favorite part is about his job at Cycleon, he replied, “The part that I am doing right now is the best! I am working for an organization and helping them to recruit the right people for the roles. It is my first time working within an organization rather than as an external via an agency.” According to Mark, working within an organization is more fulfilling because he feels like his is part of the team and can contribute to shared company goals.

He loves his job because he can talk with many different people from all around the world. Since Cycleon is a very international company, he recruits candidates from many different countries and cultures. That international spirit is one of the reasons he was swayed to choose Cycleon over other job offers he had on the table. When asked what inspired him the most about his job at Cycleon, he said,The sensation that you’re doing good when you’re placing people in the right roles. And having fun while doing it!”

Recently, Mark had one of his biggest moments of success so far in his role as Corporate Recruiter. “A few weeks ago, on August 10th, my first recruit started! Cycleon had been looking for the right person for this role since October last year. This was my first real success, and when I first talked to him I just knew he was the right guy for the job.” The matchmaking ability that Mark possesses helps ensure that the best talent with the right skillset, likeminded attitude, and drive join Cycleon and help power the organization forward. One of the things Mark highlights the most about his job at Cycleon is the “people-first” mentality. He appreciates Cycleon’s healthy work culture that is promoted from the top down.

“Cycleon has the makings of a fantastic organization especially in terms of its people. The right people are in charge, there is a great HR team, and this is the first company that I’ve seen truly put the human in human resources.”

My Cycleon Story: Gabi Buzatu

My Cycleon Story: Gabi Buzatu

Gabi Buzatu is a First Mile Specialist who started working at Cycleon in the Romanian office about 2.5 years ago in November of 2019. Previously, she worked in the banking industry for many years, so she knew very little about reverse logistics and returns. However, she was very familiar with customer service and working with clients, which was the experience she drew upon when beginning to work at Cycleon.

She was initially attracted to Cycleon because she wanted a career change and had heard good things about the company through a colleague. She was also excited about working in a very international environment where she could improve her English with colleagues from around the globe. “What made me interested was that I saw an opportunity to start from scratch because it was a completely new job. Also, I saw an opportunity to improve my English. Here, everything is in English–meetings, writing, everything.”

She was originally hired as part of the customer service team, dealing with clients and requests. Although she knew nothing about the industry, she quickly picked it up and wanted to learn everything she could. “Working at Cycleon was a big change for me because I had no idea even what a pallet was–it was a totally new industry for me.” This new environment presented her with an opportunity to learn, and step by step she became confident in her role and knew all of the inner workings of the business. When asked about the difference between banking and returns, she replied, “Everything! I wasn’t even sure about sending an email, and that made me want to learn faster to be more confident in myself”.

Indeed, her drive to learn and grow paid off as she moved from her role in customer service to be part of the First Mile team, monitoring carriers, improving services and tracking, approving invoices, negotiating costs, and much more. She also works internally with the IT squads to improve Cycleon’s products and services since she has an up-close and personal view on how they are working and the impact that they have on clients, carriers, and partners.

Of course, the job has challenges as well. She has to depend on carriers to solve issues and it isn’t always easy to communicate with so many parties. But although this is difficult at times, it also keeps her job interesting because no two days are alike. “Every day is something new, something else is happening. The good thing is that I am learning new things daily–this is the part that I like most about my job,” she said. She also appreciates the flexibility that Cycleon’s culture provides, given that hybrid working is here to stay and an environment of trust is actively fostered by management. “I really like the team that I am part of here in Romania—everyone helps each other a lot!” A self-described dog-lover, she likes to spend her time outside of work baking and is known around the office as the person who always brings the best baked goods. Baking, she says, helps her to get out of work mode and decompress. Plus, it’s a hobby that her friends, family, and colleagues all benefit from!

Do you want to become a part of our fun team? We have open positions available in Bucharest, Utrecht, and the U.S. (remote). Check out the job openings and apply today!

My Cycleon Story: Pedro Rates

My Cycleon Story: Pedro Rates

Pedro is a Software Engineer who relocated from Brazil to the Netherlands in October 2021 to work at Cycleon. He has been working in IT for the last 5 years developing applications in Java as well as processes with Camunda.

After coming across the opportunity on a jobs site, Pedro completed the entire hiring process virtually from Brazil. “It was as smooth a process as I could have hoped for. It was a very different experience from a traditional interview process, but the virtual experience was really well managed.” Pedro felt that there were no downsides to the virtual process and in fact, it was even better as he could interview from abroad, remaining at home in Brazil for the duration of the process.

For international workers, often the hardest and most intimidating aspect of working abroad is the actual relocation process itself, however for Pedro, the entire process was “as hassle-free as an international or intercontinental relocation process can be” and he went on to credit Cycleon for the part they played in making the process as problem-free as possible, the HR team was very helpful and informative, they took care of the entire visa process, I just sent HR my documents and Cycleon did the rest.”

After arriving in the Netherlands, Pedro felt that there was a really warm welcome when we arrived which made it really easy to settle in during the first few weeks. However, he did mention that the difference in the weather between the Netherlands and Brazil was significant, but he was aware of what to expect before he arrived.

Regarding the onboarding process, Pedro said, “Initially, there was so much to learn, I had a lot of meetings with key people within the company which was really helpful”. Describing the entire process as ‘really smooth and efficient’, he also mentioned that he was completely set up with a company laptop, phone, and travel card on his first day.

When asked about the cultural differences in relation to work between Brazil and the Netherlands, Pedro says that he’s noticed that people in the Netherlands seem to enjoy a better work/life balance. “In Brazil, there is a strong culture of overtime in IT, there is a lot of pressure from managers, including having to work at the weekends if there is critical work to be done and this has created a hostile IT environment,” Pedro said. In addition, Pedro compared the difference in work from home policies between the Netherlands and Brazil, saying that it is a lot more relaxed here whereas in Brazil, fixed in-office schedules are leaving workers with very little flexibility.

When asked what his biggest takeaway was from his time with Cycleon so far, Pedro highlighted how happy he was to be working in such a diverse, international environment where he gets to work in English and collaborate with people from so many different cultural backgrounds.
